Getting to Kea (Tzia)

Ferries to Kea leave from the Port of Lavrio (Λαύριο), a 30-minute drive southeast of Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos Airport).

A taxi from Athens International Airport to the port is approximately 50 Euros. You will be able to get a taxi at the airport without a reservation (there is a large taxi cue), but please note you will need to book a return taxi at the port by phone before returning to Lavrio.

Ferry Information

The boat to and from Kea is about 1.5 hours, but budget two hours because it does take some time to unload, especially if your car is in the back of the boat.

You can check ferry schedules and buy tickets on the Ferry Hopper website.  Please note that you will have to pick up your tickets at a Kiosk in the parking lot of the port.

Ferry Schedules and Booking:

  • Mainland Port: Athens Lavrio
  • Island Port: Kea (Tzia)

Please note that Lavrio is not the main port of Athens.  If you are planning to visit another island, you will likely leave from a different port.  Please make sure to check which port your ferry leaves from and plan accordingly.

Getting Around Kea

Rent a Car!

In order to fully enjoy Kea, you will need a car. It is the only way to get to the best beaches and explore the island. We highly recommend renting a car at Athens Airport and bringing it on the ferry to the island. Renting a car from the airport will ensure you will get an automatic car. Please get a car with an automatic transmission unless you are exceptionally comfortable driving a manual. The island is very hilly with many dirt roads, thus not the place to learn!

Greece has recently mandated that foreigners must have an International Licence to rent a car. This can be obtained from AAA. While enforcement is inconsistent, better safe than sorry! Visit the AAA Site >

There are two local places car rental companies on Kea, we suggest you reserve a car early if you plan to hire a car on the island.

Taxis on Kea

Kea has about 5-6 taxis that can take you anywhere on the island. They do not have taxi meters so ask in advance how much the price will be. In order to get a taxi, you need to call the driver directly.
